Aspects

Each player should create the following 5 aspects that define their character.

Aspects are shorthand phrases for concepts or facets of a character, which can be used to influence the narrative by emphasizing the character's defining features and compel/reward good role play of their flaws. See the rule book for more information on creating good aspects.

Aspects can be left blank to fill in as the character develops in play, but try to fill whatever you can. This is best done collaboratively with the other players.

High Concept

What defines your character? This should be the quintessential definition of your character (though certainly not the extent of who they are). See FATE core rules p.32 for more information/examples

Examples:

  • Firefly

    • Book - Penitent military agent
    • Inara – Courtier & courtesan
    • Jayne - Mercenary gun expert
    • Mal - Outlaw commander
    • River – Fugitive psychic savant
    • Simon – Fugitive doctor
    • Wash - Dependable pilot
    • Zoe – Loyal veteran
  • Outlaw Star

    • Aisha – Animalistic alien soldier
    • Gene – Mercenary leader & grappler pilot
    • Jim Hawking – Mechanical & electronics genius
    • Melfina – Android navigator
    • Suzuka – Superhuman swordsman assassin

Trouble

What is the central conflict of your character's personality and/or story? What draws them into adventure or complicates the things they try to do? See FATE core rules p.32 for more information/examples.

Examples:

  • Firefly

    • Book - I may never atone for a life of lies, betrayal, and killing
    • Inara – I've made enemies & keep questionable company
    • Jayne – I make more corpses and enemies than friends
    • Mal - I struggle to find peace after we lost the war
    • River – I'm an escaped experiment, and they want me back
    • Simon - I orchestrated my sister's escape and they want us both
    • Wash - Good friends with dangerous jobs
    • Zoe – I've been on the wrong side of the law since we lost the war
  • Outlaw Star

    • Aisha – Haplessly seeking lost honor
    • Jim - I would follow my friends to the edge of the universe
    • Gene – Reckless womanizing mercenary
    • Melfina – Key to the universe's greatest treasure
    • Suzuka - Hitorgia killed my master, and I will avenge them

Call Of The Black

How you came to leave the embrace of life planetside or on a station to carve out a living in the black of space.

Examples:

  • Fortune-seeker
  • I'm the last of my kind and we don't belong anywhere else
  • Running from my past
  • I've been reaching for the stars since I could look up at the sky
  • Everywhere feels lonely, but in space lonely feels normal
  • No one can ever know who/what I am
  • Space felt more like home
  • I've got a need to roam that one planet can't satisfy

What Keeps You Grounded

What brings you back to earth in a literal and metaphorical sense, what you miss about civilization, or what forces you to maintain ties. Often the cynical counterpart to a more idealistic “Call of the Black” aspect. These two aspects should work somewhat in tandem, while potentially being a bit contradictory.

Examples:

  • When I make it big, I'll be able to fix things back home
  • Somewhere to belong
  • I miss so many things I had to leave behind
  • I left someone behind I can't ever forget
  • So many I know didn't make it this far
  • Desperately seeking belonging
  • I need to atone for my past
  • I need to understand my past and who/what I am
  • This crew is the family I never had
  • New frontiers are exciting, but a familiar place is a sight for sore eyes

Role Amongst The Crew

This can be your literal job role (pilot, cook, public relations) if it’s not covered by your High Concept, but more likely it refers to your role in a social sense.  Maybe you’re the ray of sunshine that brightens up everyone’s day, or the guy who says what everyone’s thinking but no-one wants to hear. This can be left blank and filled in during the game if you're unsure.

Examples:

  • Firefly

    • Book - Moral compass & wise consult
    • Inara – Legitimacy & diplomacy
    • Jayne – Loud-mouthed pragmatist
    • Mal - Boss & father figure
    • River – I struggle with my contributions to a crew doing so much to help me
    • Simon - I mend bodies & sometimes hurt feelings
    • Wash - Heart & humor of the crew
    • Zoe – Voice of reason & mother figure
  • Outlaw Star

    • Aisha – Hard labor & a powerful fighter
    • Jim - Mechanic, hacker, & business partner
    • Gene – Pilot, gunman, & company leader
    • Melfina – Navigator & client
    • Suzuka – Honor bound warrior & ally of circumstance
